There are attractions dotted throughout the city in districts such as Altstadt, Mülln, and Neustadt, so these areas tend to be popular among tourists during holiday seasons, especially Altstadt.

More Attractive Areas for Apartments in Salzburg

Altstadt Apartments Salzburg

Altstadt is known as the Old Town of Salzburg and it is where a lot of the city’s main attractions are situated. This includes the birthplace and childhood home of Mozart, and the Salzburg Cathedral. Add this to the fact that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you won’t be surprised to see that Altstadt is a major tourist attraction throughout the holiday seasons.

If you’re happy to put up with crowds of tourists for a few months out of the year, then Salzburg’s Old Town is a wonderful place to live. The architectural and historical sites are brilliant and you still have the beautiful backdrop of the Austrian hills. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities and the chance to try some genuine Austrian cuisine. It’s a hive of activity where you won’t find yourself bored.

Apartments in Altstadt also display some of the beautifully historical architecture that this region boasts. There are a range of sizes of apartments, with accommodation from studios to 2-bedroom apartments especially common. As it is a tourist spot, this district also has plenty of hotels, serviced apartments, and holiday rentals if you’re coming to Salzburg for a shorter stay.

Hellbrunn

Although not strictly one of the administrative districts of Salzburg, Hellbrunn is one of the three landscape areas that are often considered extra to these 24 districts, alongside Gaisberg and Heuberg. The landscape area of Hellbrunn is particularly famous for Schloss Hellbrunn, a 17th Century palace that attracts visitors all year round, as well as Hellbrunner Berg, or Hellbrunn Mountain. The area also contains a lot of park land, where Schlosspark Hellbrunn and Salzburg Zoo are located.

While the area of Hellbrunn is mostly made up of rural landscapes and historical buildings as tourist attractions, there are also small residential areas that primarily host small family homes. You can find houses to rent and buy in and around the edges of Hellbrunn, as well as some apartments. There is a good-sized residential area along Hellbrunner Strasse, just outside of Salzburg’s city borders, which attracts families and young couples, both locals and expats. This area has plenty of houses, apartments, and all the local amenities you need.

The city’s public transport serves the area of Hellbrunn, so you can get into the city centre from this more rural area, and there is plenty of space for parking for those who choose to drive into the city.

Apartments in Mülln

The district of Mülln is divided into an inner and outer area. In inner Mülln, you’ll find predominantly historic buildings and architecture, while the outer portions of the district are more modern. Mülln is very close to the centre of Sazlburg, making all the shops, restaurants, and attractions easily accessible, but is far enough out to avoid much of the bustling crowds and noise throughout the tourist periods.

You can get to the Old Town via a short, picturesque walk along the Salzach River, or easily get there by bus. As well as its easy reach to the Historic Centre, Mülln also has plenty of its own attractions and amenities such as cafés, restaurants, and shopping districts. Hospitals and schools are also nearby, making this a popular area for young families moving to the city as well as young professionals and couples attracted to the nearby city centre and entertainment.

There is a wide range of choice for apartments to rent in Mülln. You’ll find single rooms to rent as well as a host of apartments to accommodate anyone from a single occupant to a whole family. Apartments in Mülln are in a great location between the city’s main attractions and its more residential and commercial areas.

Student Accommodation Salzburg

With three major universities in the city of Salzburg, lots of local and international students are attracted to living there. The University of Salzburg is located in the city’s Old Town to the West of the Salzach River, with several University buildings scattered around this district. On the other side of the river is the Mozarteum University Salzburg, a specialised music and drama university. Because of this, the majority of students tend to live in and around the city’s Historic Centre. The Paracelsus Medical University also attracts students slightly North of the Old Town to districts such as Mülln and Lehen.

Student accommodation in Salzburg is plentiful around these areas, with rooms to rent in student flats and dormitories, and full house shares available if you’re moving in with a group of students. As the University of Salzburg is a city campus, it does not have any of its own private halls of residence. Student dorms are particularly popular among students in Salzburg, allowing you to share accommodation with other students for a real taste of student life in affordable accommodation.

Salzburg Public Transport

Salzburg public transport is made up of bus services and the S-Bahn train system. Between the main bus system and the Salzburg Trolleybus, you can travel around the city on 20 different lines, with buses every 10 minutes during peak times. This makes it easy to get into the city centre from surrounding districts, as well as travelling between districts.

The S-Bahn has four lines which operate out of Salzburg’s main train station to the North of the Historic Centre, positioning it in a central spot to serve all districts of the city. Trains from this station also serve major Austrian cities including Vienna and Innsbruck, as well as other nearby cities in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

Salzburg public transport prices are reasonable, and the services are comfortable. A full fare 24-hour ticket for the bus will cost you just €5.70, and can be cheaper if you buy in advance.
